We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
— T. S. Eliot, “Little Gidding”

Travel, like love, invites the mystery

of the “other.” The essays, poems, and visual art in this volume are the works of 24 “later-life” travelers and offer intimate witness to their transformative journeys as they encounter other lands, other cultures, other times, or as they find ways to see with fresh eyes the rich tapestry of the world that lies near at hand. Share their discoveries of the gifts, costs, and quality of being human — here, now, in a world moving ever closer and, with collective attention, growing ever more dear.

Penelope Stuart Bourk, the editor, is a much-traveled writer, weaver, sculptor, and teacher who draws inspiration for her work from myth. Her essays, stories, and poems have appeared in journals, books, and newspapers. A “second journey” artist with a late-life passion for carving stumps and roots, her multi-media sculpture series contribute to programs at universities, conference centers, and churches in the Northwest. She lives on Whidbey Island in Washington state.

This beautiful, richly illustrated full-color book, 218 pages in length, contains 22 essays and nine poems walks its talk. offering readers an initiatory experience in multiple dimensions, with both heart-opening insight into transformative travel in later-life and an orientation beyond mere aging, toward the wisdom culture of engaged elders. Some of the material appeared originally in the 2013|No. 1 issue of Itineraries, Second Journey's online quarterly; other essays and poems are new. (Click here to LOOK INSIDE.)
